Sure, I agree there have to be boundaries but I'm not sure this is the issue that Danah Boyd is pointing to. It's an over-protectiveness which denies the independence of young people which she says is driving them to express themselves through social networks. To some extent this is the modern form of discipline - which includes surveillance and over-protectiveness. I'm with you that it's not working but I'm not sure how far you're saying we should go - are you advocating corporal punishment?

1900 1950 or 2008 there has always been the same problems associated with raising children. Discipline prevented complete anarchy within a household and this was generally acknowledged to be metered out by the head of the household- the male. Bring back the discipline and replace the boundaries. People know what is right and wrong and parents are ultimately responsible for the actions of their children. Keep pace withe them!! It may be difficult but it is necessary. My daughter, who is a school teacher agrees with me. You are not a friend to your children ,you are their parents and always wiil be.

One of the things I always wonder when you hear the moral-panic horror stories (e.g 30000 sex offenders found to have MySpace accounts) is how these figures match up to their presence in meat-space.

I mean, if you were to express 30000 out of 170 million as a percentage, would these numbers carry the same shock value.

I appreciate schools duty of care and understand that there are pressure to protect their students but offering the education needed to avoid these problems seems a much smarter approach than the aforementioned head in sand model.

I have tried myspace and facebook but every profile is of a 23 year old doing jello shots off someone abs...this is networking for professionals? Dont drink the koolaid about facebook, there's very few profesisonals let alone employed people using that. I have only seen 2 sites that have real professionals that you would actually want to contact. There is a site called Linkedin and a site called Congoo. Both those sites have some high quality executive profiles.
